This post is part of our Future of Smart Cities series which interviews the leading founders and executives who are on the front lines of the industry to get a better understanding of what problems the industry is facing, what trends are taking place, and what the future looks like.

The following is an interview we recently had with Sasha Kucharczyk, Co-Founder and COO of Preteckt.

1. What’s the history of Preteckt? Where and how did you begin?

SK: Preteckt resulted from iterating on an idea one of the co-founders had. As we talked to more potential customers, the idea changed over time to reflect the problems they were having in their operations. Eventually, we ended up with an idea that resonated with most of the customers we talked to.  We started in Toronto, Canada area and then moved part of our operations to Memphis, TN. Memphis, TN is a major trucking hub in the USA and the accelerator we participated in there, StartCo, provided us a lot of exposure to potential customers.

2. What specific problem does Preteckt solve? How do you solve it?

SK: Preteckt helps vehicle operators avoid unplanned maintenance events and the operational disruptions those events cause. Preteckt is a hardware and solution designed to predict upcoming maintenance issues in vehicles. Our hardware collects high-resolution data from the vehicles being monitored.

Once collected, we use machine learning algorithms to predict upcoming issues and their severity. The goal is to allow our customers to never be caught off-guard by a maintenance issue.

3. What’s the future of smart cities?

I think three technologies that are in the current ‘spotlight' will be driving the future of cities.  

Prediction #1: You will see an increase in IoT devices collecting data from new sources and helping drive design decisions (example: intelligent street lights that change based on the volume of traffic in each different).

Prediction #2: Autonomous vehicles being used in for ‘public transportation' resulting in a more personalized public transportation system (example: Uber/Lyft style autonomous vehicle systems run by a public entity)

Prediction #3: Some type of blockchain technology being used to handle payments/costs of different public infrastructure/services (example: a method to give someone priority on having a package picked up or dropped off while compensating everyone else in queue for having to wait).
