AI In Law Use Case #5: ROSS Intelligence

In this interview, we speak with Thomas J. Hamilton, LL.B., B.C.L.VP, Strategy and Operations at ROSS Intelligence, to understand how his company is using AI to transform the legal industry, and what the future of law holds.

1. What’s the story behind ROSS Intelligence? Why and how did you begin?

TH: The genesis of ROSS Intelligence came from the personal experiences of our co-founder and CTO Jimoh Ovbiagele, who witnessed as a child the disastrous financial impact his parents’ divorce had on his family. From that moment on, he was determined to use technology to make legal services affordable and efficient for everyone who needed them. The first way he set out to do this was by creating intuitive, world-class research technology that would transform the business model of law firms across the United States, and then ultimately the world.

2. Please describe your use case and how ROSS Intelligence uses artificial intelligence:

TH: In the past, if you were going to do legal research you had to rely on outdated Boolean search software to pore through millions of pages of case law. Imagine having to write a line of code, every single time you wanted to do a search at the library except that the library literally has every single piece of case law since the beginning of the legal system. With our system, you simply pose your question as you would to another lawyer, and immediately receive laser-precise answers directly from case law essentially giving you the exact language with which a judge (or judges) answered your question. We are the only legal research software company that was built from the ground up as an AI company, and as a result, have been able to create a best-in-breed Natural Language Understanding search system.

3. Could you share a specific customer/user that benefits from what you offer? What has your service done for them?

TH: We're used by attorneys at the best firms across the United States, from the largest full-service corporate law firms to boutique litigation firms and sole practitioners providing affordable legal services to members of their local community. On average, our software reduces the total time spent on research by 50-75 percent, but even more importantly, it uncovers crucial legal concepts that even after hours of research on other systems, even an expert attorney might miss. In that way, we've provided an affordable, intuitive piece of SaaS tech that lets lawyers completely re-imagine their legal practice, doing more than ever before possible.
