This interview is part of our new AI in Healthcare series, where we interview the world's top thought leaders on the front lines of the intersections between AI and healthcare.

In this interview, we speak with Vladlen Shulepov, CEO of Riseapps to understand how his company is using AI to transform healthcare, and what the future of the industry holds.

1. What's the story behind Riseapps? Why and how did you begin?

VS: In 2016, when I was starting out, the market was flooded with standard applications, and new interesting projects and technologies as AI  and IoT, were only rising. I had a deep understanding that I'd like to be a part of the world-changing force by creating valuable apps that people would actually like using. The only possible way for me, this is how I saw it, was to start a company that was capable of building outstanding apps.

Starting with building various projects for a number of industries, step by step we were building our expertise and finally, after more than 50 projects completed, we outlined the top business segments where we can provide the most value and healthcare was at the top,

2. Please describe your use case and how your company uses artificial intelligence:

VS: We were using AI for one of the projects that we developed called Inteliwound. It is a combination of a mobile and web app. The mobile app utilizes a 3D scanner to create a volumetric scan of a wound and, as a part of AI, upgraded a custom-written algorithm to make precise wound measurements, suggest treatment, and standardize documentation.

The web app helps with wound progress tracking and treatment management. All the data recorded by the mobile app gets automatically uploaded to cloud storage and then to the web app. Here, the specialist can examine the wounds with greater consideration and make a more precise medical decision based on data provided by the algorithm. To support AI in this project we built a complex web application with a React frontend and a Django backend.

3. Could you share a specific customer/user that benefits from what you offer? What has Riseapps done for them?

VS: As a part of our AI use case, Inteliwound, we created an app that facilitates medical treatment by assessing the wound complexity and offering a treatment course for the wound, based on the algorithm. This results in medical specialists spending less time on assessment (around three minutes) and paperwork by standardizing treatment protocols and spending more time on communication with patients, leading to better medical service.
